How To Get Rid Of Cellulite

So what is cellulite, why do women have it, and most importantly how can we get rid of it? First of all let’s talk about what cellulite really is. Simply put, cellulite is fat! However it is noticeably different from other fat. Why? Normal fat is deposited below the skin, where it creates a plump look. Cellulite is fat too, but it is fat that has bulged through weakened cell walls into the skin’s middle layer. The fat cells swell and pull on connective tissue, which creates a lumpy dimpled surface. Fibrous bands will then begin to form around the fat cells.

There are some contributing factors as to why women get cellulite. First, cellulite is a common condition among women and not men for a few reasons: Estrogen tends to make fat cells larger where as testosterone breaks down fat. The structure of collagen, the main protein of connective tissue in women, has the appearance of a picket fence. Whereas, in men it looks more like a cross linked fence, so the cross- linked structure is much stronger and will hold fat in better. Men also have a single layer of fat throughout their body. Women have several layers of fat in their bodies. So basically women’s bodies are genetically designed to be a place for cellulite to develop.

Some women are more prone to getting cellulite than others because of genetic factors. So it’s not a result of being obese or overweight. In fact cellulite can occur in any body type, skinny girls have it too. So if you are predisposed to getting cellulite or have other contributing factors such as hormones, lifestyle habits, or age, don’t get discouraged, there are some things that can help.

So let’s start with the basics. We all know that exercise and diet is the first place we need to start, since cellulite is fat, the less fat we have, the less cellulite we have. So if we have a fairly healthy diet along with cardio we are well on our way to being cellulite free. Don’t forget about the strength training aspect, the tighter and more define your muscle is can make a huge difference in the look of certain areas. Poor exercise and diet can also result in poor circulation and water retention which can further the effects of cellulite.

There are some products that may help with the cellulite battle. There are a few supplements that have been noted to help. Ginkgo biloba, sweet clover, grape seed, bioflavinoids, bladder wrack extract, oil of evening primrose, fish oil, and lecithin are a known few. These supplements aide by having positive effects on the body whether it’s boosting metabolism, improving circulation protecting against cell damage, or breaking down fats. Then we have the cellulite creams that I’m sure you’ve seen before. Some of these work by having a chemical present in them that help break down fat stores. Added to the fact that you massage the cream into your skin for several minutes, the massaging plays a great role in the improvement of cellulite. Massage actually redistributes the fat underneath your skin to different areas so the skins appearance improves. This in turn changes the appearance of your skin in that area. While we may not be able to get rid of cellulite altogether, there are some things that can help!
